Aesop's Treasury Books and Games
Bag, Purse, & Backpack Policy
Aesop's Treasury has a strict policy on carrying large bags, purses, and backpacks throughout the retail section of our store and sometimes we are met with resistance, even defiance, on this policy. The reason may not be clear to everyone.
As a small business, it is essential that our assets are protected. Though the policy applies to all who enter with a large bag, large purse, or backpack, that does not mean we are accusing anyone of being a thief. Many people who enter the store believe that this is a personal attack on them. It is not. Many people believe that we are the only store in the area that has this policy - we are not. Save-A-Lot of Farmington, Plummer's Ace Hardware, and most if not all thrift stores (and others) in the Farmington area carry this policy as well. Why? I'm sure the reasons are the same as ours...
We did not expect the man in his late 60s to fill his coat sleeves with used Christian/Inspiration books and we didn't expect the two very personable young gentleman, on two separate occasions, to each fill their backpacks with hundreds of dollars of merchandise and walk out of the store (discovered by security cameras), nor did we expect the 12-year old girl and her 16-year old accomplice to abscond with numerous items throughout our store (and later discovered that they had hit numerous stores in the same area).
We are not taking your purse, bag, or backpack away from you. We're asking you to LOCK UP your large bag, large purse, or backpack in the bright, shiny, new, large lockers - one where you hold the key until you're done shopping.
It is not an accusation nor is it optional. You're always welcome to lock it in the trunk of your vehicle or even just carry your wallet, but it does apply to everyone.
